Citizenship Classes
(40 Clock Hours)
For those who struggled to fit in, and who have known the
horrors of human rights transgressions or even a basic lack
of democracy, they may consider the day of their
naturalization ceremony to be the most important of their
lives. Citizenship means belonging, and it's a privilege, a
right and a status worth pursuing.
Citizenship classes provide
students with knowledge of United States history and
government. They are also designed to assist eligible
individuals to become United States citizens by practicing
listening and speaking skills in English that are necessary
to pass the oral test with an Immigration and Naturalization
Service official. Students will learn how to fill out the
Citizenship Application (INS N 400.) Students will focus on
literacy skills that are necessary to pass the written test.
Citizenship classes are for
anyone who:
has had a green card for 4
years or more (or 2 years if spouse is a citizen),
and
can read, write, and speak
basic English at a third grade level or higher (Students
will be tested on the first day of class).
A U.S. Citizen:
·
can vote
·
can have a U.S. passport
·
can receive U.S. government's protection when
abroad
·
can petition for green cards for one's
children and close relatives.
·
cannot be deported or lose citizenship (even
if s/he commits a crime or chooses to live elsewhere in the
world) unless s/he has misrepresented him/herself to get
citizenship or was ineligible at the time.
